From Horses to Wind Energy: Shelly Mueller’s Renewable Energy Journey

Why Shelly supports REFA in helping farmers and ranchers to keep their legacy

For nearly half a century, Shelly Mueller has been at home on her farm in southern Wisconsin. As both a seasoned farmer and an accomplished horse trainer, Shelly’s connection to the land runs deep. But for more than 20 years, her property has also been home to something else: wind energy.

Shelly’s involvement with renewable energy began almost two decades ago when she partnered with a wind energy developer. At the time, the idea of integrating wind power into traditional farming was still gaining traction. Today, she is living proof of how agriculture and clean energy can thrive side by side.

In 2001, Shelly leased their land to the first wind farm in the state of Wisconsin, occupying a small slice of their overall property. She says the development has provided their family with a steady income, providing stability especially since farm incomes can vary every year. The wind energy project has also added tax revenue to her community, benefiting local schools and roads.

In a video documenting her experience, Shelly shares candid insights into the realities of wind farming – the benefits, the learning curves and the long-term rewards. Her story underscores the practical knowledge and credibility that comes from working directly with renewable energy over many years.

Peer-to-Peer Learning and Authentic Representation

Shelly’s perspective embodies what REFA stands for: real farmers and ranchers sharing their experiences, offering one another guidance and standing together as a community. Her testimony is more than a personal success story; it’s a blueprint for collaboration between landowners and renewable energy developers.

Through the REFA network, members gain access to firsthand knowledge from peers like Shelly who have navigated the decisions, agreements and changes that come with renewable energy projects. This peer-to-peer exchange helps demystify the process and ensures that landowners can make confident, informed choices.

Aligning With the REFA Mission

Shelly’s journey perfectly reflects the REFA mission to empower rancher and farmer landowners. By providing expert guidance, fostering collective advocacy and equipping members with practical resources, REFA helps safeguard property rights while promoting responsible renewable energy development.

For Shelly, the wind energy development is not just a structure on her land; they are a part of her legacy. They allow her to maintain her livelihood, preserve her property for future generations and contribute to a cleaner energy future.

Shelly’s story is a testament to the fact that renewable energy in rural communities isn’t just about technology – it’s about people, stewardship and the shared wisdom that comes from decades of lived experience.
