New Association Helps Farmers and Ranchers Navigate Renewable Energy Opportunities

Renewable Energy Farmers of America connects landowners with trusted guidance as they explore complex energy projects

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (July 22, 2025) – As large-scale renewable energy reshapes the rural landscape, a new association is stepping forward to help farmers and ranchers navigate hosting these projects on their land. The Renewable Energy Farmers of America (REFA) is a farmer-led nonprofit trade organization dedicated to equipping landowners with the knowledge, education and connections they need to make informed decisions about wind and solar farms, high-voltage transmission lines and battery storage projects.

Formed in response to growing demand from producers across the country, REFA fills a critical need by offering unbiased guidance, expert advice and collective advocacy during every stage of renewable energy development.

“There was a real gap in support for landowners trying to navigate renewable energy projects on their own. We saw the potential to bring farmers and ranchers together into a network where they can learn from each other, access tangible services and make sense of a complex and evolving energy landscape. REFA exists to ensure landowners have the tools and support to make the best decisions for their future, while preserving their land and property rights for the next generation.”

Jeff Risley, Executive Director at REFA.

REFA provides its members with the guidance and resources they need to negotiate lease agreements, plan for land stewardship and embark on renewable energy projects with confidence. Membership also gives landowners access to a network of like-minded farmers and ranchers. Through REFA’s online community and in-person meetups, landowner members can share firsthand experiences and practical advice.

“REFA is built to be a steady long-term resource that grows alongside the renewable energy landscape,” said Risley. “Whether a landowner is in the early stages of exploration or already hosting a project, we want them to have somewhere to turn for honest answers and a community that understands what’s at stake.”

Membership is open to all farmer and rancher landowners in the United States for a $250 annual fee. Learn more about REFA at renewableenergyfarmers.org
